Gynecologic Cancer Screening & Prevention

Gynecologic Cancer Screening and Prevention

Gynecologic cancer screenings detect disease early, leading to more effective treatment and positive outcomes. If you meet several risk factors, if your Pap test results are abnormal or you are experiencing signs and symptoms of gynecologic cancer, your doctor will conduct further tests to confirm a diagnosis.

Gynecologic Cancer Diagnosis

Diagnosis includes a pelvic examination to check the vagina, rectum and lower abdomen for masses or growths. A Pap test may be done as part of the pelvic examination.

Signs and Symptoms

Most signs and symptoms of gynecologic cancer present as discomfort in the lower abdomen, and in many cases, symptoms do not appear until the cancer is advanced. Please consult your doctor if any of the following symptoms occur almost daily or begin and last for several weeks:

  • Bloating, indigestion, nausea, or gas
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Diarrhea, constipation, or frequent urination
  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding that starts and stops between regular menstrual periods, occurs after sexual intercourse, is heavier or lasts longer than usual, or occurs after menopause
