There is a lot of information our there about COVID-19 vaccines, and some of it may be confusing. To help clear things up, we're presenting a few simple vaccination facts.

"Effective" means effective!

Vaccines with high "efficacy rates" better protect people from become seriously ill with the virus. All three vaccines that are currently being distributed in the U.S. are considered highly effective at preventing COVID-19. Learn more about vaccine effectiveness here.

 

The vaccine can't give you COVID-19. 

Authorized vaccines do not contain the live virus and cannot give you COVID-19. The three vaccines currently in use are designed to help you body recognize and fight off COVID-19, without the use of a live virus. To be "fully vaccinated" takes 2 weeks.

The CDC considers people fully vaccinated two weeks after the final dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. You should continue to take precautions after you have received your vaccines, such as practicing social distancing and wearing a mask. Learn more about guidelines for those fully vaccinated here.

 

Herd immunity starts with all of us.

Experts estimate that 80 to 85% of us need to be vaccinated in order to achieve herd immunity. There are now three different vaccines that are recommended to prevent COVID-19: Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen. Learn more about these vaccines here.

 

The vaccine won't alter your DNA.

Approved COVID-19 vaccines help your body fight the virus - but will not affect your DNA. Vaccines teach the body's immune system how to identify and fight off infections caused by viruses. Learn more about how vaccines work here.

 

Side effects, if any, are typically mild.

Injection site soreness and mild flu-like symptoms may occur after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Side effects are normal after a vaccine, and are an indication that the body is building protection. Learn more about what to expect after your vaccination here.

COVID Trace is a contact tracing mobile app developed by the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services that uses a technology called the Exposure Notifications System from Google and Apple. The app exchanges anonymous information with other phones in your vicinity and can notify you if you've come in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. See more here.
